【一天精通一單字】Cotton
Cotton，名詞「棉花」，但是，美國人和英國人對「動詞」Cotton感受不太一樣：

美國人認為 Cotton是take a liking to someone，對人「產生好感」「套近某人」：
I don’t cotton to working for her.
(我不太喜歡在她底下做事)
I was trying to cotton up to her.
(我試著跟她親近)

英國人認為 Cotton是form an understanding of，「同意」或「理解」：
Amy cottoned onto Shelton’s way of thinking.
(Amy同意Shelton的觀點)
It will take a while to cotton on.
(需要一點時間才能明白)
I finally cottoned on to her purpose.
(我終於明白她的用意)

現代美國和英國人建立Cotton的共識：
Cotton to someone: 對人有好感
Cotton to something: 喜歡某件事
Cotton up to someone: 刻意親近某人
Cotton on: 理解
Cotton on to something: 理解或同意某件事(on可省略)

典故：
17世紀英國一篇政治諷刺短文，用Cotton當動詞，「像棉花一樣黏人」、「親近人」。

19世紀Cotton on正式列入英語字典，但是意思改變了，變成「理解、明白」，字典這麼拗：

因為棉花很黏人(adhere to people)，也就是堅持、擁護人，所以就是同意(agree with)或理解(understand)。

美國的愛情小說卻不斷引用cotton to「產生好感」、cotton up to「親近」。
