Mayor KP got dressed down when he dressed down for a formal dinner party.

這句話用到兩個dress down:

dress down穿著樸素
got dressed down，從頭到腳被罵得體無完膚，被痛批。

Dress的對象如果不是人，裝飾或加工

裝飾聖誕樹：dress a Christmas tree
處理傷口：dress the wound
拌沙拉：dress a salad
做頭髮：dress the hair
洗魚、去鱗片、除內臟：dress a fish

Dress對男性有一種非常私人的用法：

請問你的小弟弟平常放褲襠的左邊還是右邊呢？

Dress up 打扮、盛裝打扮

Dress up, Dress down, 都是看場合決定穿著樸素或者要盛裝打扮。

Dress up後面加上 as，通常是裝扮成特殊人物，比方：She dressed herself up as an elf. (她把自己打扮成小精靈)

Dress it up 粉飾事實

電影實習大叔(The Internship)，大叔第一天在Google的表現非常糟糕，回飯店檢討：

Billy: I'm not gonna dress it up. Today didn't go well.

(不想說假話安慰自己，今天很不順利)

Nick: It certainly wasn't the first impression we were looking for.
