There he is! There’s my brother,” I screamed.

It had been more than two years since I had seen my brother Christopher.

And now he was finally within arm’s reach(就在眼跟前).

I had the urge to(有股衝動要…) drop everything in my hands, run over and hug him.

Christopher was in Guam for work(來工作).

I never imagined that we would have(居然會有) a reunion(團圓) on the island of Guam(關島).

A U.S. territory(領土) in Micronesia(密克羅尼西亞群島) in the Western Pacific Ocean, Guam is small, yet it offers(提供) a host of(一大堆) activities(活動).

Guam is distinguished by(著稱) its beautiful beaches.

Chamorro villages and ancient latte stones(拉提石).

Christopher was my tour guide(響導) as we explored(探索).

We started with a hike(健行) to Cetti Falls, which included sliding down(滑下) sand hills and using ropes to climb waterfalls(瀑布).

I was surprised(驚訝) to hear that this island is home to(所在地) a very high mountain.

So what did we do?

We hiked Mount Lamlam all the way to the top(一路到最高點).

However, since most of the mountain is underwater(水面下), we reached the top in no time(很短時間).

衝動和欲望,很迫切的想要做什麼事,用法是have the urge to do something

重逢、團聚,一家團圓,Family Reunion,同學會也是用這各字,High-school ReunionClass Reunion of High School,很少聽過雜誌上寫的High School Class Reunion,僅提供參考

A host of

這是一個常用片語,和Host(主人)無關,一大堆、一大群、一狗票的東西或人,常常寫成:a whole host of people/things

Distinguish [dɪ'stɪŋɡwɪʃ]

動詞,區別、辨別,但是有一種情況Distinguish yourself,區別自己?不是,是做某些事情讓自己在眾人面前傑出,這個字常常用被動式出現,be distinguished by something而著名Distinguished也可以當形容詞,著名的、傑出的」,喜劇泰斗艾迪墨菲在1992年演過The Distinguished Gentleman,從一個騙子(Con Man)搖身一變成為傑出的男人,當選國會議員(Congressman),當然,也是騙選票選上的

Chamorro village

關島查莫洛村,以夜市小吃聞名,由一幢幢白色的西班牙式建築所組成,村內聚集了超過 40 間傳統工藝品店及小餐館

Latte Stones

拉堤石遺跡,興建於西元1100年到1700年,古查莫洛人蓋房子時用來當基柱的柱石,由下半部的石柱以及上半部的石帽組成

Sept 28th

Scuba diving(潛泳) in Guam definitely(絕對地) took my experience to a whole new level(帶到另一個更高階段).

The waters were warm and crystal clear(清澈無比).

On one dive(潛水), I saw an airplane that had last flown(最後飛行) during World War II.

On another adventure, we explored the Pagat Cave.

A short but steep hike down some cliffs(峭壁) took us to this amazing natural wonder(天然奇景).

We took glow lights(螢光燈) to penetrate(刺穿) the darkness of the cave(洞穴).

Inside the cave, we found a pool of water(一池水) sitting in complete darkness.

After leaving the cave, we took a short hike through the jungle(叢林) where we came upon(意外見到) the ocean.

Keen(熱衷的) hikers, we also made the trip(走一趟) to Siqua Falls.

We hike through the desert(沙漠), waded through(涉水穿過…) mud holes(泥洞) and climbed up steep hills.

We had to crawl over(爬越) logs(木頭) and cross streams(溪流).

At the end of trail(小徑), a beautiful waterfall tumbled down(倒下) the rocks.

When most people think of(想到) Guam, they probably think of tropical beaches(熱帶海灘).

But I will always remember Guam as a place of outdoor adventure where my brother and I were reunited(重逢).

 

《詞彙分析》

Scuba diving

潛泳,又稱水肺潛水,ScubaAqualung(水肺),但是Scuba很少單獨存在,已經是潛泳的代名詞

Crystal Clear

字面上是晶瑩剔透,有兩種使用情況,當有老師問你到底聽懂了沒有(Do I make myself clear?),你回答Crystal Clear,表示已經完全明白;另一種情況就是雜誌上寫的,非常乾淨

Glow Light

事實上應該用Glow Stick(螢光棒),螢光,Glow-in-the-dark

Penetrate ['pɛnətret]

穿透、刺透、看穿,在正式的場合,可以用Penetrate取代Understand明白某件事,另外,Penetrate是兩性的術語,也是比較正式,插入

Come upon something

意外見到、意外發現,而且往往是迎面而來,所以用upon,比方忽然發現國家寶藏,一臉意外的表情;如果是something come upon you,那意思不同,表示你突然有某種感覺上心頭,A feeling of caring came upon me. (我忽然佛心來著)

Keen [kin]

這是一個具有多重意義的字,根據用法,意思不同,Keep直接加一個人物,代表熱衷的,Keen photographer(攝影迷)Keen Golfer(高爾夫痴),但這是比較英式的英語,其他用法,以後會慢慢見到,貪多嚼不爛

特地去哪裡一趟,不是去旅行,比方吃歐式自助餐,每去拿食物一趟就是一個Trip
