這一集比較不好懂，不是英文不好懂，而是不懂Twitter總裁Dick Costolo到底想要講什麼？

有必要先了解故事背景：

Costolo接任Twitter CEO沒幾個月，俄羅斯總統”梅德維傑夫”親自來訪，這對新任高階主管，是何等大事，千萬不能出錯

一切都安排妥當，就在”梅德維傑夫”發他生平第一封推文的時候，Twitter網站掛了

臉丟到全世界，對新任CEO內心造成多大的衝擊，造成多大的影響，多大的Impact

這樣的Impact，你無法預料，形成Costolo的人生觀：

「專注現在的事情，把現在的事情做好，至於未來可能發生的意外，不要多想」

Here’s the amazing thing about what I’ve observed when I’ve witnessed all of those things. Not only can you not plan the impact you’re going to have. You often won’t recognize it even while you’re having it.

A few months after I started at Twitter, Russian President Medvedev was coming to the office. And that morning going to the office, the streets were all completely blocked off by the San Francisco Police and the U.S Secret Service was there and Russian Security Forces were there and so was this crazy scene walking into the building.

I remember going through the metal detector to get into our office which was there just for the day and there were all these guys in these crazy uniforms with these beautiful German Shepherds that looked like they could kill you standing right next to them.

And so there was this huge buildup and President Medvedev came into the office with his entourage and there’re all these reporters and cameras behind them and he was going to send out his first tweet from the office to the rest of the world.

Everyone was waiting for that to happen and as he was walking down the hall, taking a tour of the office before going to send his first tweet, I got a tap on my shoulder and I turn around and I say, “What is it?” And this person says to me, “The site is down.”

And being the thoughtful, charismatic leader that I am, I said, “Like totally down?” Totally down.

So the next day, you know you guys and the rest of the world read President Obama welcoming Russian President Medvedev to Twitter and declaring that we maybe no longer needed the red phone anymore because we could now use Twitter.

But for me, that moment was, “The site is down.” And it’s always like that, not the “site is down” part. The impact is what others framed for you and the world after it happens.

The present is only what you’re experiencing and focused on right now.

大家都在期盼這一刻來臨，當總統步入大廳(walking down the hall)，在發送推文前參觀辦公室(take a tour of the office)，有人在我肩膀拍了一下(a tap on my shoulder)，我轉頭問：「什麼事？」這個人告訴我說：「網站掛了(the site is down)」。

身為體貼(thoughtful)而且有魅力(charismatic)的領導人，我問道：「是全掛了嗎？」沒錯，真的全掛了。

隔天，你們大家和全世界的人都知道(read)歐巴馬總統歡迎俄羅斯總統梅德維傑夫加入推特的新聞，並宣布(declare)雙方將來或許不再需要熱線電話(red phone)，因為我們都用推特了。(Red Telephone是美國和俄羅斯雙方總統的Hotline直撥熱線電話)

但是對我來說，那一刻的意義是「網站掛了」，事情總是這樣，我講的不是「網站掛了」這部分，我講的是，這件事發生之後，大家把你和世界框限在某個評價上(frame something for you and the world)，這樣評價的衝擊影響(impact)。

當下(Present)，才是你唯一在體驗的事情，也是你唯一在專注的事情。
