Excitement and patriotism(愛國主義) are natural results(自然產生的結果) of Olympics, but an added measure(增添的某些數量) of inspiration(鼓舞) accompanies(伴隨) the Paralympics.

The Paralympic Games(殘障奧運比賽), events(比賽項目) for athletes with injuries(受傷) or physical disabilities(身體殘疾), start today in Rio(里約), and Brazil(巴西) has worked to(努力去…) change perceptions(認知、觀點) of the competition.

A hidden-camera(隱藏攝影機) video was released showing a leg amputee(被截肢者) outrunning(跑贏) runners, a blind woman outfighting(打贏) a judo(柔道) expert and a little person outlifting weighlifters(舉重選手).

The point(論點) was clear – these individuals(個人), all Paralympians, are not second-rank(二級的) athletes but first-rate(一流的) professionals(專家) that deserve(應得) our respect and support.

Events(比賽項目)

Most Paralympic sports correspond to(相當於) Olympic events, such as wheelchair(輪椅) tennis and basketball, cycling(自行車運動), swimming and many others.

But there are two particular events that are only found in the Paralympics – goalball(盲人門球) and boccia(硬地滾球).

In goalball blind athletes compete in teams(組隊比賽) to roll a ball with bells(鈴鐺) fixed inside it(安裝在裡面) into a goal while the other team attempts to block(阻擋).

Athletes with motor impairments(行動不良) are the focus of boccia, which involves(包含) rolling balls with accuracy(精確) in order to get as close to a target ball as possible.

1. Para-

以Para-當字首的單字，有四種可能意思

1) 超越(beyond)，比方paramount(至高無上), 字面超越山峰

2) 類似、同等(similar)，比方parallel(平行的)

3) 專業助理，比方paramedic(護理人員), paralegal(律師助理)

4) 與降落傘有關的(parachute)

殘障運動員，有兩種稱呼，Able-bodied Athlete和Para-athlete，屬於Para-的第二類

2. A measure of something

A measure of something是一個常用詞彙，= a number of something good, a number of something you expected，也就是某東西的某些數量(= some)，而這東西是好東西或者是樂見的東西：Jim had achieved a measure of success. (Jim已經成功了一部份, some success)

3. Inspiration [ˌɪnspəˈreʃən]

靈感，或者是「鼓動人心的東西」，很久1984年芝加哥合唱團一首情歌打動當時很多人，歌名You’re the inspiration，當時中譯，「妳是我的靈感」，一直都覺得怪怪的，後來才知道，主唱Peter Cetera的意思是，「妳是鼓勵我上進的人」，歌詞如下：

“You're the meaning in my life”

“You're the inspiration”

“You bring feeling to my life”

“You're the inspiration”

“When you love somebody…”

4. Event

「事件或活動」，在大型比賽裡面，Event是其中的一個「比賽項目」，如果翻譯成事件或活動，不太專業

7. Motor Impairment

Motor即馬達(Engine)，動力來源，Impairment(身體某部分功能的傷殘)，兩個字合起來代表「行動不便的人」

A story behind every athlete

Though Paralympic sports are sure to interest(一定會令人感興趣), the participants themselves are remarkable(了不起的) individuals with inspiring stories(啟發人心的故事).

Hong Kong’s Leung Yuk Wing, affected by(受…影響、患有) muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎縮症), made a classic return(經典回歸、光榮回家).

He faced a career decline(事業下滑) after seeing(見證、面臨) great initial success(初步的成功) in the 2004 Paralympics.

Though he didn’t win another gold medal for 10 years, he was ranked(位列...) the top boccia player(選手) at the end of 2015.

Another player to watch(關注) is American George Gallego, who hopes to compete in Paralympics’ first triathlon event.

Gallego became a wheelchair athlete to challenge himself following a spinal cord(脊髓、脊椎) injury and significant weight gain(暴肥).

He has since become a counselor(顧問) to others with similar injuries through an organization called Wheels of Progress.

Competing in her fifth successive(連續的) Paralympics, Lin Tzu Hui is very successful within the sport of powerlifiting(健力運動).

Though she had polio(小兒麻痺), she has distinguished herself(表現出眾) by breaking world records in her category(所有的項目) and winning one of Chinese Taipei’s first gold medals.

These few athletes show that the Paralympics are not a half-measure(半吊子) but a full-scale(全面的) sporting competition.

Be sure to interest

一定會令人感到有興趣，如果用文法的觀點看，是有問題的，因為Interest是及物動詞，後面需要受詞，事實上，Be sure to do something是口語，要對方一定要記得某件事，既然是口語，文法就沒這麼重要了(吧)

Spine Cord

Spine(脊椎骨)，Cord(繩子班的管狀物)，合起來就是脊椎骨中間的脊髓

Powerlifting

從舉重運動中分化出來的一項新興運動,以深蹲、臥推和硬拉為比賽內容

Half-measure

源自詞組Half Measures(半吊子、事情做一半)，改成形容詞之後Measure不用複數，口語比較難聽一點，Half Ass，最有名的Half Ass之一是台北大巨蛋
